The Big Apple and a Bunch of Little Apples

So far, so good, here in the big apple. Union Square is really bustling with such an array of fruit and vegetables it puts our Maryland farmer's market to shame...the varieties of apples, pears, berries and vegetables is so wide. The fall entourage, brussels sprouts, winter squash, kale and jerusalem artichokes are coming into season while the last of the corn and peaches are still here. I am still finding myself wanting corn, tomatoes, string beans and peaches (clearly in denial that these chilly mornings mean fall has arrived); the kids are ready for all of the fall harvest, enjoying the root vegetables, and I can not even keep up the supply of these apples and pears. Occasionally, over the summer, we would suffer through an imported or west coast large farmed fuji apple or pink lady, which my spoiled children scoff at and put peanut butter on to help disguise the not so fresh picked taste. Now, they are relishing in the absolutely crisp home grown flavor of real apples. (Even "texture girl", as we call Perry, will eat every type of apple Susannah and I bring home from our journeys to Union Square).
Susannah enjoyed scooping out her avocado for a picnic on the grass at Union Square before chowing down the whole carton of cherry tomatoes. The words "yes, you may have a couple", well, relatively meaningless to a four year old...hmm.
