Kids in Trees

After rain and long car rides, climbing trees is a city kid's dream come true. After foraging for field garlic and chowing down on it for lunch, we are searching for ramps this weekend so we can have my ramp salad dressing. Ramps (wild leeks0 are available only for a few weeks in the spring so we want to get them while the getting is good...if we don't find any I still have a bunch from the farmer's market. They are very high in antioxidants in the alliaceous family that really pulls a mean fight against illness...diallyl disulfide is the micronutrient responsible for the immune boosting power as well as the robust odor which while tasty is not doing much for my breath right now.
OK, as a selfish mother I admit I dread these words, "Mom, can I have some of your salad?" Why can't they just ask me for one when I am making it? So, I stopped eating and made Susannah the salad monster her own today with my ramp dressing. She loved the dressing...it is simple, ramps, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and a sun dried tomato blended really well in a fast high power blender. Susannah wanted hers over just lettuce and make it crunchy...hmm.
